Taboo is the name of a musical George has co-written, and is based on the New Romantic era of the early 80's. The name is taken from a nightclub which was run by Leigh Bowery, one of the characters featuring in the musical, now scheduled to open in London on January 29 2002, with previews beginning on January 11.

Auditions for Taboo were held in London during August (see pics at left) with People Weekly (US, Aug 27 2001) reporting the following:

"Curious George wannabees with enough eyeshadow to make up Duran Duran and Tammy Faye warbled their way through 'Karma Chameleon', George's 1983 hit single with Culture Club.
Less talented hopefuls also showed. And why not? As George told the British Press Association, he was once a long shot too.

According to George, Taboo is "a fictional story about a young guy from a small town in the north of England who comes to London to find himself, to discover the bright lights, and comes into contact with a group of people - myself being one of them, as well as Steve Strange, Marilyn, Leigh Bowery and all those London nightlife characters - who take him on a journey through his sexuality. It's kind of a double plot, a story within a story."

Other characters in Taboo include Philip Sallon, Trojan, Fat Sue and Bucket Gill.

It was revealed on Global Culture that a videotaped run thru was greeted by a standing ovation by various muso's. Taboo is seen to be a sure fire hit.

The new songs in the 16 song score have been co-written by George with long time collaborator John Themis and songs will range from old to brand new. In a post to the official Culture Club site, John Themis mentioned the following songs as likely Taboo candidates: "Credibility", "Love is Lonely", "Petrified", "I See Through You", "Stranger In This World", "Il Adore", "20th Century Jesus", "Genocide Peroxide", and "Vanity Case". Songs "Gimme A Freak" and "Ode To Attention Seekers (I'm Known In All The Wrong Places)" have been especially written for Taboo. "Hits" like Karma Chameleon and Do You Really Want To Hurt Me are also featured.
